With the Russian military playing a key role in the survival of President Assad's leadership in Syria, President Putin, of Russia, has made great inroads into his power, presence and influence in this key region of the world, the Middle East. Putin is actually "marching across the ME and increasing his impact on the region". Like the Soviet Union, of several decades ago, the Russia Federation now is as powerful as they have ever been, if not more powerful, and Putin is now the key player in that part of the world.
