AND YOU SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

INTRODUCTION

In the 8th chapter of the gospel of John, Jesus confronted the Jews with their own sin. They thought they were confronting Him. The Sadduccess and Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery to him seeking to trap him. When they asked Him if she should be stoned according to the law of Moses, he answered them, “let him who is without sin cast the first stone”. They were convicted by their own conscience and they left. Jesus told them that He judged no one, but His judgment is true. He told them that “He that sent me is true”. He also told them that the things that He was speaking were the things “which I have heard of Him”

There were some there who believed in Him and He told those who believed in Him that if they continued in His word they would be His disciples indeed; and He said, “you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”. Free from what, one may ask. Truth sets us free from the bondage and consequences of sin. Jesus told His disciples that He was Truth! We are living in a day and a time when the number of those who do not know or recognize truth seems to be increasing daily. Increasingly the old adage “they will lie when the truth is better” is becoming commonplace. Indeed many in the political arena speak non-truth as a matter of practice in order to promote their political agenda. Even more troubling is that some, perhaps even many, of those so called leaders in the church are speaking “untruth.” When the leader of the Roman Catholic Church says that good Muslims, atheists, and other non-Christians are going to Heaven, he is speaking against The Truth! Jesus-who is Truth itself and who speaks that which He had heard from the Father of Glory, who Jesus said IS TRUE- said, “no man comes to the Father except by me”, meaning goes to heaven. Indeed, in John 17:17, Jesus, praying to the Father says, sanctify them in thy Truth. Thy word is Truth. Thus, the Roman Catholic leader is not speaking truth. And when so-called leaders in the church say that they don’t know what happens to a person when he dies if he doesn’t know the Lord Jesus Christ, they are not speaking truth.

John 3:36 states clearly that one must believe on the Son of God to have everlasting life- meaning go to heaven- and if he does not believe the Son, “he shall not see life, but the Wrath of God abides on him.”

When so-called Christian leaders promote sodomy and sexual perversion of all kinds, including the “LGBTQ” agenda, they are speaking “untruth.” God’s Word tells us that we are to be holy for our Father in heaven is holy. Sodomy is unholy. The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah resulted in the destruction of those ungodly and unrighteous cities. It will also result in the destruction of those who promote and do these things, unless they repent from their sin and place their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. They must know the truth, for it is the truth that will set them free.

Those who promote the murder of little babies in or outside their mother’s womb, whether they call it  “abortion” or not, are speaking “untruth.” Unless they repent and turn from their sin and place their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for their salvation, they shall die in their sins, for the wrath of God will abide continually on them. They must know the truth and the truth will set them free.

Those who are promoting fellowship between Christians and non-Christians such as Muslims, Buddhist, Hindus, atheists, and other non-Christians are speaking untruth. For God’s Word says there can be no fellowship between darkness and light. Unless they repent from their sin and place their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ; they will abide in their sin; they shall die in their sin, and the wrath of God shall abide on them. They must know the truth and the truth will set them free. We will look at the need for everyone for God’s Holy Truth. (All have sinned- none are righteous). The way of receiving God’s Holy Truth. (the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ- God alone gives righteousness). And, the result of receiving God’s Holy Truth. (We are adopted into His family, made sons of God and are born again.)

 I.    ALL HAVE SINNED

“There are none righteous, not one” according to God’s Holy Word (Romans 3:10) Everyone has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) It is God alone who justifies by faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ. He gives us this unspeakable gift by His grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Scripture makes it clear that no one can save themselves. Indeed, “whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God”. (Romans 3:19)  That means, of course, everyone. For by nature, everyone apart from the Lord Jesus Christ, is dead in their trespasses and sins. They are by nature children of wrath. Because of Adam’s sin, everyone who is born into the world is by nature a child of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). Moreover, they also sin by choice (Isaiah 53:6).  Scripture tells us that “by the deeds of the law no flesh shall be justified in God’s sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin”. (Romans 3:20) But God who is rich in mercy gives us hope. He was merciful to Adam and Eve, our ancestors. He gave them hope. He told them, while they were yet in the garden, that there would come a Savior of the seed of the woman who would crush Satan’s head and whose heel would be bruised. It is only by the Lord Jesus Christ alone that we are given salvation. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and no man comes unto the Father but by Him” (John 14:6) He is truth and we must know Him who is the truth and that truth will set us free. Because all have sinned and there are none righteous, all need God’s Holy truth. We should hunger and thirst after righteousness and scripture says we shall be filled (Matthew 5:6). Christians must know and understand that. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world! The Lord Jesus Christ came into the world to seek and to save those who were/are lost and to give His life a ransom for many. He became sin for us, though He had never sinned, that we might be made the Righteousness of God In Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is faithful and true! There is no untruth with God our Father, The Lord Jesus Christ is truth. The Holy Spirit Himself leads us into all Truth. Thus, the Blessed Holy Trinity is concerned that we KNOW THE TRUTH which will set us free from the bondage of sin and the wrath to come.

II.    HOW TO RECEIVE GOD’S HOLY TRUTH

It is God alone who gives His Holy Truth to whom He will. It is God’s sovereign choice to give salvation to whom He will. Seek Him with your whole heart. Seek His Holy Truth. Seek Him with your whole heart for those who you know do not know Him. Jesus said to ask, seek and knock in His name and our Heavenly Father will give good gifts to those who ask (Matthew 7:7-11) We must ask in Jesus and in the Spirit. God will have mercy on those whom you know who may not know the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ, the holy living Word of Almighty God, has told us in His Holy Word that “if you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11) Therefore ask this of Him, in faith, doubting not, for He is true and His word is truth. Ask in the Spirit, in the name of Jesus for all those who you know or believe need to know the Lord Jesus Christ and receive salvation from God.

The Apostle Paul states plainly in the very first chapter of his letter to the Church of Rome that “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16) It is the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ that is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

God alone gives us saving faith, for He says in His holy Word, “by grace are you saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast”. (Ephesians 2: 8-9) “Christ Himself, who knew no sin, became sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)  “For God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them and has committed unto us the word of reconciliation”.  (2 Corinthians 5:19) He is the Lord our righteousness, that is His name. What a magnificent unspeakable gift that God, who cannot lie has given us. You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.

III.    THE RESULT OF RECEIVING GOD’S HOLY TRUTH

Not only are we by nature children of wrath, but we have also sinned and done wickedly in His sight. The good news is that “God has laid on Him the iniquity of us all”. (Isaiah 53:6)  He forgives all of our sin in Christ Jesus – in the beloved! Even the Angels and principalities and powers in heavenly places look – as it were – over the parapets of heaven to see this holy and marvelous creation of God in bringing many sons to glory. Everyone should earnestly and fervently desire to know the truth; to know the Lord Jesus Christ and His fullness; for “He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and no man comes unto the Father but by Him”.

While Scripture tells us that apart from Christ the wrath of God abides on all who do not know the Lord Jesus Christ, it also tells us that the “wrath of God is already revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness”. As we have already seen, there are many forms of suppressing the truth. We’ve only touched on a few. There are many forms of lying. Let us all knock and seek and ask in the blessed name of the Lord Jesus Christ that we would speak the truth in love; that we would know the truth and that the truth would set us free; that we would walk in truth and not in ungodliness or unrighteousness or suppression of the truth in unrighteousness. A more detailed account of those on whom the wrath of God is already revealed is set forth in the very first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Church at Rome in verses 18 through 32, but as one former nationally known radio broadcaster was fond of saying, “there’s good news tonight”, for all those who surrender their will to the Lord Jesus Christ in true repentance, and place their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for their salvation. They are given the gift of eternal life. Their sins are forgiven. Have you done that? Have your children and grandchildren? This is blessed forgiveness from the Lord our God.

But much more, much much more, we are actually made the Sons of God in Christ Jesus. The sinless Son of God was made sin for us, the sinful sons of men, that we may be made the Sons of God in Him. We are united to the Lord Jesus Christ and receive the same Spirit which the Lord Jesus Christ had dwelling in Him-God’s Holy Spirit. We are sealed with the Spirit as the authenticity of God’s holy work in us. Do you have this? Do your children and grandchildren and neighbors have this? Do you know?

I earnestly and fervently desire that you know these holy truths and that all of your family and those to whom you can talk, know these holy truths. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom Paul said, “he was chief”.  Howbeit he said he had obtained mercy, that in him first, Jesus Christ might show forth all long suffering as a pattern unto those who would hereafter believe on him to eternal life. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners- of whom [Paul said] I am the worst (1 Timothy 1:15-16). But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Come unto Him. Tell all you know of Him. Don’t be shy!

CONCLUSION

“Now may the God of all peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ and great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect unto every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen”

He is truth! Seek Him that you may know the truth which shall set you free.
