In 1887, Charles Spurgeon published an article titled “The Down Grade” in his magazine titled The Sword and the Trowel. While published anonymously, we know the author was Spurgeon’s friend Robert Shindler. The article stated that the church was slowly getting away from essential Bible doctrine.
