Christian Responsibility in Hostile Times | October 5, 2023
Persecution is happening for those who call evil for what it is. This is due to the fact that there are those who call evil, “good.” In fact, these same people are attacking Christianity and its values, the values that our nation was founded upon.
So what should believers do? Should we cower in fear or are there duties that we are responsible for adhering to in such times?
Returning to talk about our responsibilities in hostile times, Crosstalk welcomed back Mat Staver. Mat is founder & chairman of Liberty Counsel. He is a constitutional attorney with three landmark cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He’s an author and the host of the radio broadcasts Faith & Freedom and Freedom’s Call.
Discussion began with review of the fact that for the first time in America’s history, the position of Speaker of the house was vacated by a majority vote. This was despite the fact that out of 95% of Republicans that are in the House, 8 did join with Democrats to vacate the position.
On the Senate side, with the passing of Senator Feinstein, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his appointment of Laphonza Butler to be the new senator. However, her radical credentials don’t mirror biblical values. Aside from that, she’s not even a resident of California so there may be a challenge on that point.
On the main topic, Mat commented on the following points, that together show how Christian values are under attack:
This week the U.S. Supreme Court began their new term and recently Mat told Crosstalk listeners that he will be petitioning the court to take up the case for Kim Davis, the now retired, Rowan County, Kentucky, Clerk. (See Crosstalk for September 18th) This case could result in the overturning of the 2015 Obergefell same-sex marriage opinion.
Sandra Merritt is an advocate for the pre-born who was doing undercover journalism and exposing Planned Parenthood concerning aborted baby body parts. Mat explained more about who she is, what happened and how the court responded.
There’s a court battle over a decision to ban drag shows at West Texas A&M University. The U.S. District Judge ruled that the ban could remain in effect amidst a legal challenge, saying that drag shows contain sexualized expressive conduct that isn’t protected under the First Amendment. However, a group called “Lubbock Pride” is pushing back, claiming that the judge is a Christian and that his beliefs make it impossible for him to be fair and impartial. This is in spite of the fact that the Constitution has no religious test for such officials, as Mat explained.
North Dakota State Representative Brandon Prichard came up with the suggestion that gay history month should also include a lesson about what took place at Sodom and Gomorrah. This has angered the Freedom from Religion Foundation and they’re demanding that the representative either apologize or resign.
